Description This 5 day course will concentrate on a variety of basic skills to help develop your canoeing techniques and lay down a solid foundation. The essential skills covered are river running, strokes, kayak handling skills, safety, rescue and rolling techniques, advice on clothing and equipment and planning your own canoe trips.
Available dates in 2010: 24-28 May 5-9 July 9-13 August
Itinerary Day 1 Introduction to canoes and kayaks. Clothing and equipment. Introduction of basic handling techniques and strokes. Safety and capsize drills.
Day 2
More basic stokes and handling techniques. Introduction of rolling techniques and rescue skills.
Day 3
A river trip, looking at basic river running skills such as breaking in and out, ferry gliding, and river rescue.
Day 4
A sea trip, looking at planning a journey, introducing navigation, weather forecasting, looking at tidal currents and more strokes.
Day 5
Options day. Either white water or another sea trip to bring together all the skills learnt during the week. Finally, a course debrief.
Note
This course has to be flexible. If the weather or conditions on the sea are bad we will maximise the relevant training wherever possible.
Non-swimmer’s are welcome, but it is very important that anyone taking part in this course is water confident in cold water with a buoyancy aid.
